Sean Garmen was an automotive genius. He serviced some of the most prized cars on the continent, until the day he tripped over one of his son’s toys and wound up with disabling back pain.
Doctor Henry Winslow was an orthopedic surgeon who could no longer operate. He was hired as the medical director of the WhiteGuard Health Insurance Company and charged with the task of reducing WhiteGuard’s expenses for pain management. He passionately pursued that goal until the day he took a nasty fall and wound up with obnoxious back pain.
In their searches for relief, both Sean Garmen and Henry Winslow were victimized by the for-profit health care system that Henry helped to create. Each of them suffered from misdiagnoses, drug regulations, the promotion of certain procedural and pharmacologic interventions, insurance restrictions, and bad care by a predatory surgeon.

Dr. Beverly Hurwitz, originally from Brooklyn, New York, has spent her professional life as a physician, educator, and author.
In her youth she won awards for scholastic journalism and served as copy editor for her college newspaper. Before attending medical school, she spent a decade as a health and physical education teacher in rural public schools.
As a medical fellow, Beverly specialized in the care of children with neurologic disability. After three decades of clinical practice, she spent eight years as a medical case analyst/writer for administrative law judges in federal and state court systems. In recent years, she has been writing novels and hiking books.
