Daisies! You Can’t Have Daisies at a Wedding!
By Mary Calvert
“This is MY wedding. I eloped and so I didn’t have a wedding. You are the first daughter to get married. Just remember, you may be getting married, but this is MY wedding.” – The Mother of the Bride
Five children are raised by an angry mother just after World War ll during a time when there was no awareness of child abuse. The father is present but not involved in raising or protecting the children. The story is told from one daughter’s point of view. She recognizes her mother’s deficiency and attempts to create her own happiness through a number of misadventures. Eventually she discovers the generational nature of her mother’s anger and confronts her parents. She and her siblings become happy and successful despite the fact that her mother’s behavior never changes or improves. The siblings support each other emotionally to provide happiness and a feeling of security in the family.
Mary Calvert really did grow-up in a big family, and also raised a rather large family. She worked, as a school principal, and was also a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for decades. Mary has treated families where a child or spouse is the unconscious proxy for a difficult prior relationship affecting the dominant parent or spouse—it is surprisingly common. This story shows the generational effect on the entire family. Daisies! You can’t have Daisies at a Wedding! depicts some of the youngster’s techniques they employed to survive their undiagnosed and untreated difficult circumstances. Mary began writing again in retirement, and it has become more than just a hobby.
